Cassandra (Cassie) Crews
“Happiness is an inside job.”
Cassandra (Cassie) Crews was a USAF Medic serving in Germany. She met her soon to be husband, Wes, her very first day. He was new to Germany also but they stayed a total of six years. Cassie then went on to get her RN and spent another 25 years in neonatal nursing. Her first child, a daughter they named Jennifer, was born in Germany and her second child, a son named Wesley, was born in Odessa, Texas. Wesley was born with severe VonWillibrand’s Disease, which is a blood clotting disorder. When he was three years old, he was infected with HIV and hepatitis C from a blood transfusion. The family relocated to the Dallas area to be near the best healthcare.
It was in the Dallas area that they they had their third child, a son, that they named Michael. When Wesley was 10 he started having HIV symptoms. The doctor sent him to NIH in Bethesda, Maryland for treatment, and he went for a total of 14 years. It was during a trip to the DC area where Cassie met a lady poet who joined their support group to teach parents to write poetry as a way of dealing with trauma. It became a fun and fulffilling outlet for Cassie and she enjoys it to this day. She has been able to take classes and been schooled by experts in the field. She enjoys learning all different varieties of poetry and continues to write and study.
